Marie’s Room

Marie’s Room

A narrative experiment that explores how much a small space can tell.

The second game in this selection is a narrative experiment that has been gaining popularity on Steam. Artistically, it is highly polished for a free release, but mechanically it is a failed attempt to escape the walking simulator cliche, ending up as a kind of 3D pixel hunt.

Still, Marie’s Room remains a memorable experience that reflects on the possibilities of videogames. It asks how a story can be told while restricting space and interactions as much as possible, how deep emotions can be conveyed through pixels, and how the player can be transported into an entire universe contained inside a small room.

Marie’s Room is mechanically bland but artistically polished. It is short, yet significant at the same time. It is only a single room in a 3D environment, but it is full of life, memories, and emotion.
